Most burglaries and break-ins are opportunistic and happen very fast. If a burglar can gain quick entry to a property without too much noise the property is in far greater risk. Enhanced locks that mean any attempt to gain access will result in too much attention-drawing noise will deter the most fearless invader.

Fit mortice locks to all outside doors.

Fit window locks to all  windows, not just the ground floor ones.

Install a burglar alarm, make sure it is clearly visible from the front of the house – then always ensure it is set when you leave the property.

Never leave personal valuables (e.g. wallets, cash, keys, jewellery, cameras, etc) in a position where they can be clearly seen from a window.

Don’t hide a spare key to your property: there are only so many places you can put one (e.g. mat, plant pot, door frame, light fitting, under a stone, by the garden shed) and if a burglar has time to look he will always find it.

If you are away from your property for a long weekend or for a holiday, it is good to leave lights and maybe radios switched on, controlled by timers.  Inexpensive and easy-to-use timers are available from all DIY stores and most larger supermarkets.

Make sure you’re not vulnerable.

Never leave items unsecured in front or back gardens which may be used to facilitate a break-in – for example ladders, hammer etc.

In winter months when it gets dark early be sure to close your front curtains when you have your lights turned on.

If leaving your property without anyone inside it, never leave without closing all windows and locking all doors, even if only popping down to the shops for five minutes or picking the kids up form school.
